What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a method of mechanically exfoliating the upper layers of non-viable skin cells. Abrasive particles such as aluminum oxide crystals, sodium bicarb salts or silicone-derived particles are forcibly directed out through a hand piece and right onto the surface of the skin. As the handpiece is gently advanced, the abrasive particles are guided out and suctioned back into the unit. This combination of abrasion and suction removes upper layers of dead skin and seems to stimulate lower layers of healthy skin to reproduce.

What are the effects of microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is reported to: soften fine wrinkles, lessen superficial skin discoloration, smoothen the skin’s surface, and provide the skin with a healthy glow. It also enhances the effect of topical medications.

Is it safe?
Yes. The products used are safe, FDA-approved, and are biodegradable. This treatment is also safe to be given to patient that is pregnant.

Does it hurt?
The suctioning effect is mild and should not cause pain. As the patient tolerance to the suction increases, the clinician adjusts the intensity of the particles or the strength of the suction, ascertaining that the treatment is within tolerable limits.

What are the side effects?
There will be a slight tautness of the skin, temporary redness, and temporary streaking and/or swelling. This usually disappears in a few hours.

How long does it last?
Generally, it lasts 15-20 minutes. Since there is no downtime, the patient can go back to his/her usual activities.

How often should I get it?
Once every 2 weeks then once a month is the recommended frequency. Some patients prefer a weekly treatment for a month for the initial phase. Inquire from your clinician what frequency is recommended for you.

How much does it cost?
The price range is $100 to $125 not including the recommended sunscreen product.
